Gratitude : Practice to more fulfilling life
Being grateful isn't that simple as it sounds. In this age of social media, we often come across the message of practicing gratitude, showing appreciation to others and being thankful for our lives. While its undeniably important to be grateful, its more easier said than done. Inspired by the wisdom of many books, I have come to realize that gratitude can be cultivated in our life in small, deliberate steps.
#1 Make Gratitude a Daily Habit
Gratitude should become an integral part of our daily routine. It can be as simple as:
- Starting your day with a grateful prayer.
- Smiling at yourself in the mirror, as you brush or get dressed, expressing thanks to the wonderful day ahead.
- Taking a walk, appreciating the beautiful nature that provides you fresh air.
- Dedicating a moment to jot down three things you are grateful for each day.
#2 Express Gratitude to Loved ones
Our loved ones stand by us through our thick and thin. It doesn't take much to say a heartfelt thankyou with a smile for the smallest gesture like reminding you to drink water and stay hydrated. Show appreciation when they invest time in sitting beside you and listening to your thoughts, whether they relate to them or not. This simple act will bring joy to both you and your loved ones.
#3 Express Gratitude to Strangers
Strangers from the past can become like family in the future so begin by sharing a simple smile while you encounter strangers during your daily walks. A simple smile can brighten their day, especially if they may be going through some rough times. Your act of kindness can trigger their dopamine, reducing their anxious thoughts. There! by bringing joy to others you also bring joy to yourself.
#4 Serve with Gratitude
Our world may be diverse and colorful, but the reality is often black and white with shades of gray in between. While some people have the luxury of choosing their breakfast, others wake up to nothing. Regardless of whether you believe in God or the universe ,we are human beings for a reason. We may seem divided, but holds a unique purpose- share and serve. This could be through charitable acts, helping the needy or providing food and clothing. Find a way to serve the less fortunate at least once a month. By the end of the year, you'll feel pride in the happiness and kindness you have spread.
#5 Gratitude through Forgiveness
Feeling grateful after forgiving someone can be incredibly healing. Forgiveness is often the hardest part but the most transformative process that will ultimately benefit you. Holding onto past grievances can be detrimental to our own well-being. By forgiving, we free ourselves from the burdens of the past and find gratitude in the effort to heal and move forward. It doesn't mean we have to engage with them. By accepting the complexities of life, we just need to find forgiveness in their failures and gratitude in their efforts.
Gratitude is a profound pursuit that can lead us to other sources of happiness-- Kindness, compassion, confidence, and resilience. By practicing gratitude we can attain meaningful lives and make a positive impact on those around us. Its a journey worth embarking on, that will bring immeasurable joy to you and the world around you.
